3PL is a business process through which companies outsource their logistics and distribution functions to a service provider that specializes in handling logistics such as transportation, warehousing, and freight and forwarding. A service provider that provides these services is called a 3PL provider. Often, 3PL providers go beyond logistics and provide value-added services such as inventory management, cross-docking, door-to-door delivery, and packaging of products. They also provide strategic and operational value to many shippers worldwide. 3PL uses new and innovative SCM to enhance efficiency.

The analysts forecast the 3PL market in US to grow at a CAGR of 5.37 percent over the period 2014-2019.
